The molecule in which the genetic code is written, and packaged into chromosomes in the nucleus.
Fertilization
The penetration of an ovum by a spermatozoon to form a zygote that can form a fetus.
Embryo
In humans, the first eight weeks after fertilization, following which it is referred to as a fetus.
Fistula
An abnormal passage between two organs or an organ and a body surface.
Flagella
Long extensions used for cellular propulsions.
Gamete
An ovum or spermatozoon.
Gestation
Pregnancy.
Lumen
Central passageway within an internal tube.
Menstruation
Regular shedding of the uterine walls, usually monthly, during the reproductive period of a female lifespan.
Metaphase
Second phase of mitosis.
Medial
A structure that is nearer to the midline.
Medulla
Inner layer of a gland or structure.
Posterior (dorsal)
Lying to the back of a body.
Proximal
Nearer to the origin body part.
Sagittal plane
An imaginary vertical plane dividing the body into two halves.
Superficial
Near the body of the surface.
Zygote
Fertilised egg formed by the fusion of male and female gametes.
